If you want to weave a
porch weave seat
(or back)
that looks like this:

New England Porch Weave

This is a very old classic pattern. They wove up quickly
and were very sturdy. There were many companies manufacturing the big old porch chairs and rockers

through out New England. You see them on the grand
porches in the old Photos. One of the largest manufacturers was the Colony Mills in Keene New Hampshire.

As time passed the rocker changed slightly. The seat
became a 'drop on' seat. When you study the rocker
you can see how the back was woven separate and then attached to the frame, The change to a 'drop on' seat
also allowed this to happen to the seat. There are many variations to this type of seat. Later on in years I was
in a port warehouse where there was a massive inventory
of pre-woven backs and seats. The manufacturer would
have them woven, in this case Haiti, and then shipped
to the states and assembled onto the rocker.

Today we weave on the frame after all repairs are done.
This is a production weave, and as I have taught, it was intended to be finished quickly and have great strength.

  Chair seat weaving appears difficult,
but with these instructions your project will go easy.
The name is a tribute to the area, where many
survivors may still be found.
The tradition material was Wide Binder cane,
but there are several very acceptable alternatives. A similar pattern is the Carolina Close Weave.

There have recently been several 'knockoffs'
to this pattern book.
They say imitation is flattery, but the directions
are distressing to me.
It is important to weave a solid, tight seat, your time
and craftsmanship is important.

Caning (seat weaving) is fun,
and as I discuss the frame of mind is important.
Sit back, take the pressure away, and enjoy the process.

These porch pattern weaving kits are intended to re-seat an average chair seat.
This pattern, may also be woven on big old porch chairs, and rockers.
To re- seat a porch rocker (seat and back) three seat lots are required,
(one kit plus; 2 extra lots) or - to do just a large seat, 2 lots would be used.

these are also known as Kennedy Rockers, sometimes the weave is referred to as basketweave
