From the Preface "This is a personal book — a book about reweaving the hand-woven seats of old chairs. "As I write this book there is a circle of old chairs around me. The tallest is an old rocker that doesn't rock. I bought it at a second hand store and put a rush seat in it that fitted its sparse Shaker lines. Someday I’ll have the "rock" fixed. "Next to it is a ladder back chair with sawed-off legs and the remains of a rich dark green paint on it. This chair has a new seat of ash splint which suits it very well. It was a bargain at $1.00. "With it was another chair, a refined ladder back chair, and they were in the rain outside an antique shop. I bought them both. The refined chair has a tape woven seat of calico colors: mustard yellow and paprika red. "There are two rockers in the group; one is my Grandmother’s, a Victorian rocker of generous size with a caned back and seat. Caned many years ago by an anonymous master caner, it has been the model for my caning and rushing classes for many years. "One chair has only a half-done rush seat. It’s probably my favorite because it came with the studio. I found it in the loft of the barn which is now the studio. It’s a small, decrepit, but delicate, ladder back chair with red paint still on it. I have taken it to fairs to demonstrate rushing and have had a hard time not selling it to enthusiastic young antiquers. "The aristocrat of the gathering is Miss Catlin’s chair. Miss Catlin, a well-to-do lady who had a singing career in New York, ended her days with my grandmother and left her this elegant Hitchcock style chair, grained to look like walnut, and decorated freehand in gold. It has the finest rush seat I have ever seen; narrow perfect strands of rush are evenly woven into an elegantly shaped seat. "I suppose it looks odd to see me surrounded with these old empty chairs while I
write and sketch. But how else could I give you the details, with authenticity, on how to
fit new seats to old chairs?"
